Mattresses

As humans spend about one-third of their lives sleeping, it's important to have the right mattress. Getting a good night's sleep is essential to our physical and mental health, and to do that we need comfortable mattresses.

When you need a new mattress, head to the HomesDirect365 online shop, where you'll find a great range to choose from, as well as great value bedroom furniture.

Here's some helpful advice about choosing the right mattress along with a taste of what we have to offer:

Mattress Size

There are no international standard sizes, and this can cause problems when choosing a new mattress. Even in the UK, certain manufacturers and outlets don't agree on sizes, so it's always best to double-check the dimensions to make sure that it fits your bed.

To find out more about mattress sizes, check out our guide to UK mattress sizes on the HomesDirect365 website.

As for the mattresses in our online shop, they are suited to the following UK bed sizes:

  • Single Beds - 90 x 190 cm
  • Double Beds - 135 x 190 cm
  • King Size Beds - 150 x 200 cm
  • Super King Size Beds - 180 x 200 cm

Although there may be slight differences in size, all our mattresses generally fall within these guidelines and will fit most beds.

Mattress Thickness

You also need to take into account the thickness of your new mattress. Depending on the type of bed frame you have, there's a chance that the mattress may be too thin or even too thick. With bunk beds, for example, mattresses should never be too thick as they may allow the sleeper in the upper bunk to roll over the safety rail.

Also, your sleeping position has a bearing on which is the best mattress thickness for you (although firmness is more important - see below).

On the whole, mattresses between 20 and 30 cm are the best to go for, depending on the type. For example, a memory foam mattress needs to be thicker than a pocket-sprung mattress to provide the same level of comfort and support. You can discover more in the Mattress Type section further along.

For your information, here are the dimensions for mattress thickness:

  • Standard - 15 to 25 cm
  • Thick - 26 to 30 cm
  • Extra thick - 30+ cm

Mattress Firmness Ratings

Mattress firmness is possibly the most important factor, as it determines overall comfort and body support. Again, there is no set standard for firmness rating, which can make it difficult to pick the best mattress for you.

In the UK, mattresses generally fall somewhere in these categories:

  • Extra Soft mattresses
  • Soft Mattresses
  • Medium Mattresses
  • Firm Mattresses
  • Extra Firm Mattresses

Check the description for each mattress to discover its firmness rating before you buy.

Although it comes down to personal preference to some degree, most people benefit from medium firm mattresses as these allow natural body contours in the surface while supporting the spine correctly.

The HomesDirect365 mattress range sits somewhere in the middle of the ratings, although we have one extra firm mattress, the Mellbreak PowerPack, specially designed for people with aches and pains. The ingenious 'PostureTech' spring system reacts to body weight and gives support where it's required.

The Mellbreak PowerPack is available in all four sizes and is double-sided.

Mattress Type

You have a choice of mattress types these days, as research reveals new ideas and innovations.

Here are a few different types that you can find on the HomesDirect365 online store.

Gel Mattresses

The Alston, Hamilton, Ashton and Sterling Geltex ranges are all part of our gel mattress collection. These use a brilliant combination of foam and gel to form an intelligent, breathable filling that regulates your temperature and responds to your body as it moves. It also relieves pressure points, making it a fantastic way to get a great night's sleep!

Latex Mattresses

The Waltham is our only latex mattress at present, with a flexible, anti-bacterial layer that provides comfort and keeps you cool and fresh as you sleep.

The PostureTech and Edgeguard technology ensures total support for a better night's sleep.

Quilted Mattresses

Most mattresses are quilted or tufted. While most people prefer quilted mattresses as they appear to be more level, there really isn't a lot of difference in terms of which is the more comfortable.

Tufting holds the mattress together, keeping the springs in place. The tufts are covered with fabric or a pompom of some kind, so they rarely cause a problem - unless the craftsmanship is not up to standard.

Quilting, however, looks nicer and provides a smoother sleeping surface. Our Sterling, Waltham, Chester and Claremont mattresses are great examples.

Memory Foam Mattresses

At least four of our mattress ranges use memory foam, which moulds itself to the contours of your body. These are the Venus, Cloud, Eaglesfield and Claremont Memorysense mattresses.

Memory foam mattresses have proved a popular addition to bedding products in the last decade or so, creating the effect of a soft mattress with extra support.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

Pocket sprung mattresses have been around for many years but has been improved greatly. The term 'pocket springs' comes from the fact that the bed springs are contained in individual compartments of tough, durable fabric, which allows them to work together to provide even support across the surface. Several of our mattress examples use this highly-effective method.

Rolled Mattresses

The Venus coil sprung and Cloud memory foam mattresses mentioned above both come rolled and vacuum-packed for easy delivery. Once opened, they unfold and expand into their regular shape.

Our rolled mattresses are made from high-density foam, and the Cloud range has a 15 cm layer of memory foam for added comfort.

Orthopaedic Mattresses

You may need an orthopaedic mattress if you suffer from joint pain or back problems. These are ideal for anyone with chronic conditions, senior citizens, and people recovering from injuries. We have several orthopaedic mattresses in our collection, including the Mellbreak and Steeple PowerPack, and the Eaglesfield MemorySense that offer excellent back support.

Open-Coil Mattresses

Open coil mattresses are among the cheaper mattresses as they are easier to produce, and we have some in our budget range. Unlike the pocket-spring examples, the springs are intertwined and stuffed with a filling to create uniform support. You'll find the Azarra and Arabella open-coil mattresses in our online shop.

Hybrid Mattresses (Combination Mattresses)

A hybrid mattress is a combination of springs and foam or gel layers. Technically, our Geltex mattresses are hybrids, although we don't use this category on our website to avoid confusion.
